On the Pallagrello Hills — A Slow Itinerary Through Wine, Villages and Nature in Alta Campania

Some kinds of travel can’t be measured in kilometres covered or attractions ticked off a list. It’s that slow journey where you wake up without rushing, with a good breakfast waiting for you and a window that opens onto the countryside. That’s exactly what happens when you arrive at Le Piracante, our charming B&B on the hills of Caiazzo, in the heart of the Valle del Medio Volturno, in Alta Campania. If you’re planning an escape from the everyday and wondering how many nights to dedicate to your desire for a real break, the answer is at least two or three. Here’s why.

Picnic on the Caiazzo hills featuring traditional local products.

As a premise  it’s worth pointing out that this territory is genuinely suited to welcoming a demand for what’s known as “food and wine tourism,” albeit a niche one. The local native products are a true excellence, known to many but not to all. Small-scale production, family-run farms passing their craft down through generations. The “guardian farmers” of those vegetable and legume seeds found only where they were born and have been cultivated since time immemorial. In this area we have some particularly remarkable products: among them, the riccio tomato, grown on the Caiazzo hills and used, for example, by Franco Pepe for his now-famous pizzas at Pepe in Grani. The caiazzana olive, a Slow Food Presidium, whose trees you can admire throughout our hills. And others, which I describe on the page dedicated to local products. Among these stands the Pallagrello — a native grape variety of rare nobility, distinctive of the Caiazzo area, with the singular characteristic of existing in both white and red varieties. Already celebrated by the Borboni  in the famous “Vigna del Ventaglio,” it is today an elite oenological excellence that expresses the authentic identity and mineral elegance of Caiazzo’s terroir. To truly discover the soul of these wines, I recommend contacting our friend Paola at the Alepa winery; and if you’d like to savour the taste of local products in a rustic, intimate, family setting, I recommend the Home Restaurant run by our friend Angelo at Il Giardino Segreto. But now let’s look in more detail at why it’s truly worth staying several days at Le Piracante

THE ARRIVAL — FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Welcome to Le Piracante, on Caiazzo Hills

Arriving at Le Piracante is never just… an arrival. It’s always a little bit of a discovery. I always meet guests at the car park, walk with them to their room, show them the space that will feel a little like a friend’s home for however long they’ve chosen to stay, and offer my support as an informal local guide. We may well have been in touch before your arrival — I might have already helped you choose an experience through my digital guides, even before check-in: a cultural visit, a wine tasting, a quick lunch.
Once you’re here, we walk together through the farmyard in front of the house. Sometimes guests stop in the courtyard to take in the view and have a chat; other times the first moment of stillness comes when you step into the shared sitting room. I often notice pleasantly surprised expressions — the same reaction I see when guests enter the room they’ve chosen.
The carefully curated atmosphere, the small details expressing warmth and comfort, will make you feel genuinely welcomed. The arrival is the first impression — sometimes followed by a few hours of complete relaxation, other times lasting just a few minutes before heading to dinner at a pre-booked table.

BREAKFAST: THE DAY STARTS (ALREADY) WELL

Start with a good breakfast in the garden. Local product, fresh air, relax and the time that you want for plan your day

The first reason to stay more than one night is as simple as it is irresistible: the km0 breakfast. At Le Piracante, every morning the table is laid with local, seasonal products, carefully selected according to your tastes. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you understand why certain flavours can only be found here, and not in a supermarket. Our breakfast is fairly simple, personalised and delicious — sweet, savoury, or both, according to your preferences, always respecting what’s in season. It’s also the perfect moment to calmly decide how to spend the first part of the day, or to plan everything right through to the evening.

Starting the day this way changes your whole perspective — and the adventure begins.

A STRATEGIC BASE FOR EXPLORING ALTA CAMPANIA

Hand-drawn map of the Caserta area and Middle Volturno Valley, showing the location of Le Piracante.

Caiazzo is not just a postcard-pretty village — it’s a privileged gateway to one of the richest and least crowded parts of Campania. From Le Piracante, you can reach extraordinary and very different places in an average of 20 to 45 minutes. Each day of your stay can have a completely different feel.
Here is an example of an interesting, varied travel programme, with generous time for relaxation and the option to add further experiences.

DAY 1 — THE GREAT HISTORIC SITES: THE ROYAL PALACE AND THE AMPHITHEATRE

View of the Royal Palace of Caserta Park, located just a short drive from our location.

The Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 25 minutes from Caiazzo: one of the largest royal palaces in the world, with its formal Italian gardens and English garden, it deserves an entire morning. In the afternoon, just a few kilometres away, you can visit the Campano Amphitheatre in Santa Maria Capua Vetere — the second largest Roman amphitheatre in Italy after the Colosseum, a place that few tourists truly know, and one that will leave you speechless. If you’d like to go deeper into history, you can also visit the Mithraeum and the Archaeological Museum of Capua.
Two world-class sites in a single day, without stress and with no queues worth mentioning. (Entrance to the Royal Palace may take time on certain public holidays, but you can buy your ticket online and skip the queue.)
If you’d like suggestions for a quick snack or a packed lunch, just ask!

DAY 2 — THE VILLAGES AND THE MATESE: THE AUTHENTIC SOUL OF THE TERRITORY

Historical villages within the Matese Regional Park, rich in culture and tradition.

Alta Campania is a constellation of small medieval villages that seem frozen in time: Caiazzo itself, with its ancient walls and cathedral, but also Castello del Matese, Piedimonte Matese, Alvignano and many others, each with its own history, its own churches, its own craftspeople.
If you love nature and enjoy walking, the Matese Regional Park is less than an hour away: hikes through forests, lakes and Apennine panoramas, suitable for all fitness levels. In spring and autumn the landscape is simply breathtaking.
Local guides are invaluable here. I’ll give you contacts for professional guides for more demanding excursions or planned experiences, along with useful websites — and I’ll be on hand to recommend the itineraries best suited to your pace, your interests and the season of your visit: from challenging trails to gentle strolls.
In the evening, you can enjoy dinner at a local restaurant to satisfy your post-hike appetite and the flavours of our local cuisine.

WALKING IN THE SURROUNDING AREA: THE LUXURY OF SLOWNESS

Seasonal colors of the rolling hills surrounding our property.

Not everything needs to be planned. One of the experiences most appreciated by our guests is simply sitting in our courtyard with a book, heading out on foot from the property for a morning jog, or taking a quiet walk along the lanes and letting the footpaths between the Caiazzo hills lead the way. Vineyards, olive groves, the scent of freshly cut grass, silence broken only by birdsong. It’s the kind of luxury you don’t expect — and one that gives you that sense of peace we sometimes truly need.

THE RURALARTLAB: CREATIVITY AND CRAFT TO EXPERIENCE FIRSTHAND

Creative workshop session with RuralArtLab for relaxation and mindfulness.

Le Piracante is not just a place to sleep or relax with the dolce far niente — it is a living laboratory. The RuralArtLab is the creative space born from our vision of hospitality that goes beyond bed and breakfast. Here you can discover the world of art applied to natural materials, creative recycling, and recovery. Or you can enjoy moments of creative mindfulness through drawing, painting, or crochet.
It’s an experience to share, and one of the reasons many guests find themselves wanting to return soon. Depending on personal inclination and how much time you’d like to devote to it, you can choose from different creative mindfulness options: a relaxing experience as a couple through drawing, modelling an object inspired by nature, learning the basics of crochet to create a thousand ideas, and more — as I describe in the section dedicated to the RuralArtLab.

WHERE TO EAT, WHAT TO BUY, WHAT TO TASTE

Traditional local cuisine and artisanal products from the Caiazzo area.

The area of upper Campania  is a gastronomic treasure trove waiting to be discovered. Local wines like the Pallagrello, produced right on the Caiazzo hills; cheeses and dairy products; baked goods made with ancient grains; artisan cured meats; native vegetables and legumes; exceptional extra-virgin olive oil; and our caiazzana olive, a Slow Food Presidium.
We’re here to guide you: we know where to eat really well (from traditional-cuisine restaurants to country trattorias, all the way to the celebrated Pepe in Grani in Caiazzo), where to do a wine tasting at a local cellar, and where to buy the best local products without risking bringing home something mediocre. Our territory guides aren’t a brochure — they’re advice born from years of direct knowledge of producers, wineries and craftspeople.
Our guests have access to dedicated information and guides, as well as our assistance throughout their stay.

NIGHTS AT LE PIRACANTE: A DIFFERENT KIND OF SLEEP

The romantic "Between Heaven and Earth" room at Le Piracante.
At the end of each day, coming back to Le Piracante is like being wrapped in something warm. Real silence — the kind that no longer exists in cities. The rooms are carefully thought out in every detail, comfortable, designed to make each guest feel genuinely welcomed — not just housed. The view over the hills, especially at sunset or at dawn, is worth the journey in itself. The two rooms are completely different from one another — which is why we suggest choosing the one that best suits your tastes and needs. Explore our hospitality spaces here.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU REALLY NEED?

Canoeing on Lake Matese, one of the outdoor experiences we recommend to our guests.

One day is not enough. With two nights you can comfortably fit in two or three experiences and get a taste of the inner peace you were looking for — but you’ll leave feeling you’ve barely scratched the surface. With three nights the pace shifts: you slow down, you come into sync with the territory, you have time to do nothing at all — and you discover that it’s the most restorative thing of all. We gather testimonies from guests who, even after six days, leave with a desire to return and rediscover moments, people and places that moved them. That’s why, to have the right amount of time, we suggest staying at least 2 to 3 nights — the minimum needed to build a truly good travel memory.
